Episode 286 – Thibaut Montgillard on Tonnellerie Meyrieux and Wine Barrels Part 1
Thibaut Montgillard is a master cooper and has been at the Meyrieux cooperage in Burgundy for 15 years making artisan wine barrels.

They produce only the best quality barrels and make 3000 per year exporting 70% of production. The barrels are priced at around 600 euros each. We hear about the sourcing of the oak from French forests, mainly in central France and how different oaks are used for different wines. Vosges oak for example is very aromatic and is used by only for Chardonnay. The trees are grown specifically for production of oak barrels and can be 150 years old or more.
