We talk about the region, its climate and grapes. There are 51 Grand Crus which only started to be categorised in the 1980s. The Kaefferkopf Grand Cru is famous for its blended wine made with Gewurtztraminer (min. 60%) and Riesling plus a small proportion of Muscat or Pinot Gris is allowed. There are talks of a Premier Cru category being introduced but no final plans.
There are 9 grape varieties: 4 noble grapes Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Gris & Muscat with Sylvaner, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, Auxerrois and for red, Pinot Noir.
