Uruguay is between Brazil and Argentina on the East coast and Uruguay is the only coastal wine region in South America, claims Gabriel. Spanish and Italian immigrants settled here originally and so brought with them a wine drinking culture, establishing vineyards. 90% of the vineyards are close to the South Atlantic ocean. We talk about their liquid Tannat, a wine fortified with Grappa. After fermentation they add over-ripe grapes that have been left on the vines after normal harvest. Tannat is a vine from the South of France, but Uruguay has the biggest planting in the world. As the name goes, its a tannic red wine. So, unusually, they make a sparkling Tannat, which is dry style made to the traditional method. They only make 3000 bottles a year (but growing) and it is all made by hand including the riddling and disgorging. Their production of still wines amounts to 300,000 bottles.
