Uruguay is on 34th parallel (similar to Stellenbosch or New Zealand) and is located between Argentina and Brazil on the East Coast of South America. It is quite flat and has a maritime climate similar to South of France. Wine has been produced since the early 1800s, when early settlers made wine for religious purposes, and commercial viticulture was established from 1870. Canelones is the main wine making region which is north of the capital Montevideo. Tannat is the signature grape of Uruguay brought from France in 1870 and accounts for about 30% of total wine production. 30% is rose, 7% white wine and the rest of production is red.
