Episode 612 – Henry Mchedlishvili on traditional Georgian wine making
Henry Mchedlishvili is from Georgia and he has been making wines at Plumpton College in Sussex in the traditional Georgian style using clay vessels called qvervi (pronounced querry). They are egg shaped, clay pots which come in different sizes and they were first used to make wine in 6000 BC, 8000 years ago (when the pots were discovered in 2017, grape seeds were found inside which meant scientists were able to carbon date the pots).

Henry makes orange wine (white wine with skin contact) and red wines. He has used Merlot, Trebbiano, Montepulciano and Pinot Noir for the reds. Plumpton College students help with the production.
