Episode 418 – Patrice Pinet on the history of Courvoisier and Cognac
Patrice gives us a brief history of Courvoisier, which began as a wine and spirit business created by the Courvoisier family in Paris in the suburb of Bercy in 1809. In 1909 they sold the business to the Simon family from England who developed the brand in the UK and promoted the family’s long association with Napoleon.

The Cognac region is in south west of France about 120km north of Bordeaux (450km from Paris). The region enjoys a micro-climate that is created by the Atlantic influence and has the River Charente running through it which meant the brandy could be easily shipped to traders.
There are 6 sub-regions, called crus, 2 of which are Grand Champagne and Petit Champagne, characterized by their chalky soils. A blend of Grande and Petite Champagne Cognacs, with at least half coming from Grande Champagne, is known as Fine Champagne. The main grape variety that dominates is Ugni Blanc, which accounts for 98% of plantings.
