They have made the application process for accepting students much more stringent and have made the test at the end of the first stage in the first year compulsory. 30% leave the study programme at that point and then another 30% or so will take the stage one exam again. The Institute make it clear that it is a self study programme with seminars, trips and events for students to attend and a range of MWs who spend time with students in different parts of the world. Each student is given their own Master of Wine mentor to provide additional support through their studies and students establish their own tasting groups to ensure there is opportunity to taste plenty of wines. Penny describes a great taster as being someone who tastes like a detective and argues like a lawyer!
Applications open 1st June 2018 www.mastersofwine.org/en/education/who-can-apply.cfm
