We taste barrel samples of 4 Pinot Noirs to illustrate the effect of vine age. The samples range from young vines planted in 2011 (4 years ago) to 9 year old, 15 year old and 23 year old. In the young vine wine the fruit is like an explosion and doesn’t last very long, as the vine ages these fruit flavours are longer lasting with more depth. With the 9 year old vine, same wine making process, but the flavours head away from sweet and easy towards more earthy, spicy and more complex. We hear how the flavour and structure changes, remembering that these samples aren’t the finished wines so we’re not experiencing the final product.
