Koshu is a white grape variety with pale pink skin, producing mostly still dry wine but sometimes sparkling and very occasionally sweet. Alcohol levels are generally around 11% and the dominant aromas are citrus with some stone fruit. Its quite a delicate, light style with good acidity. The actual origin of the grape is unknown but it is through to have come from China to Japan along the Silk Road and has been grown for 1000 years. The winemaking is only in recent times in the last 180 years. Koshu is grown predominantly in the Yamanashi Prefecture of Japan. We discuss food and wine pairing and it goes well with a wide range of foods beyond Japanese cuisine such as sushi, tempura, kaiseki and sashimi, as well as French (creamy/garlic), British and Spanish foods.
