The property is approx 70km south-east of Cape Town and has been in ownership of the Cluver Family since 1896. Paul Cluver was the first commercial vineyard in Elgin with the first plantings in 1987, producing their first wine 3 years later in 1990. The vineyards, located on an elevated plateau 300-550 metres above sea level, are totally surrounded by mountains, but they close to the coast, about 10 miles as the crow flies. We discuss the climate (moderate), irrigation (micro vs drip irrigation), the soils (mainly shale with underlying clay) and sustainable farming. They also grow apples!
