The industry has been growing for 2 decades, driven by an increase in plantings which have tripled since 2000 (doubled since 2010) and now stand at over 6000 acres of area under vine. Last year a million vines were planted and this year will see 1.5 to 2 million vines being planted (2018). Pinot Noir is the most widely planted, but only slightly ahead of Chardonnay.
The future’s bright for English and Welsh wine and already we are starting to see volume increases in wine production to around 5.9 million bottles in 2017. Wing GB have done their sums and if you were to draw parallels with previous emerging regions, by 2040 we could be producing up to 40 million bottles to create an industry worth around £1 billion per annum.
